Well now, here's the funny thing. If you walk into a British casino you will, more often than not, see the roulette table designated as 'American Roulette'. What makes it American is that it uses different coloured chips for each player at the table so that their bets can be told apart. It is in fact British (see below).

Roulette American

Americans like to play roulette with a "00" and a hefty edge against them. The wheel has the normal numbers from 1 to 36 in alternate red and black colours with a green zero and also their 'double zero', also green. Therefore the game has a total of 38 numbers to bet on. The edge against the player is large and consequently the game is not nearly so popular there. Tipping the croupier for a good win is also a tax on top of the house vig. Ouch!

In American Roulette the wheel consist of 38 identical slots, numbered from 0, 00, 1 through 36.

On the standard roulette wheel the numbers are not distributed in increasing series or randomly.

On the contrary, the numbers are ordered to achieve a certain mathematical balance between high and low, red and black and even and odd:

Red and black numbers alternate, usually two odd numbers alternate with two even numbers. All red numbers are opposite the black numbers. Every odd number is opposite the next higher even number. Most numbers are part of a pair, with one number between them. The sums of these pairs are either 37 or 39. Zero and double zero are both green pockets, while the remaining 36 are split evenly between red and black.

Object of the game Roulette is played by spinning a small ball on a round wheel. When the wheel stops, the ball comes to rest in one of the numbered slots.

Object of the game is to predict which number out of possible 38 the ball will land on.

The "Surrender" rule

This option can be found on some American roulette tables. Outside bets are not lost on a zero and double zero but you lose half of your bet. With this rule the house edge on the even-money bets is only 2.63% compared to 5.26% on other bets.
